1.Why does Shell recruit Graduates?
•We recruit graduates in order to identify people with leadership poten
tial in their early career and bring them up for future leadership coverage.
•For that purpose, we put much more emphasis on your leadership potenti
al than on existing knowledge & skills by assessing your Capacity, Achievement
, and Relationship.
2.What is Graduate Development Scheme?
•Shell Graduate Development Scheme is a 3 years program that is provide
d to our graduate staff in their early career.
•The objective is to fast track high potential graduate to first line m
anagerial roles in 3 years time to prepare them for senior leadership roles in
longer-term.
3.What are Shell’s selection criteria? What is Shell looking for?
•For the purpose of developing leadership pipeline, we emphasize and as
sess your leadership potential through three perspectives: Capacity, Achieveme
nt, and Relationships.
•We expect you of analyzing complex issues and concepts, working throug
h their implications and to develop creative but realistic solutions.
•To manage successfully in a complex business you will require mental r
esilience of the highest order. Sometimes, calculated risks have to be taken a
nd ultimately it takes courage to take responsibility and stand up for your op
inion, even when events could ultimately go against you. This is what we call
Achievement.
•Our business and our leaders cannot succeed without healthy, open, dir
ect and constructive relationships with Governments, industry partners, commun
ity groups, individual customers and between Shell colleagues. To manage them
effectively, real relationship building skill and often humor are required as
well.
4.How many does Shell plan to recruit for 2005?
•We target to recruit around 8 - 10 graduates in three cities for Shell
(China) Ltd for 2005.
•Shell traditionally doesn’t recruit a big number because of the size
of the organization and our capability of providing decent coaching & developm
ent exposure.
5.Where are the positions?
•Majority of the jobs are located in Beijing with 2-3 jobs mobile, poss
ibly, could be in Shanghai or Guangzhou.
•However, we treat all graduates in one pool without giving any conside
ration to his/her location in the selection process. When we give offers, we w
ill discuss with you location issue. Usually we expect you to be flexible.
•In a long run, we also expect our people to be mobile in order to deve
lop in the organization. However, the individual always makes the final choice
.
6.Does Shell offer Fall, Spring and Summer Internships?
•We cannot guarantee to offer Fall, Spring and Summer Internships; howe
ver we are trying to gather internships or part-time jobs currently.
•For those who pass June Shell Recruitment Day (SRD: 评估中心) and get
Shell’s offer, we may start our on-boarding program earlier and provide you o
pportunities to get better understanding of our business, culture, work enviro
nment and your job. You may also have chances to be drawn in some assignments/
projects before you formally start working in Shell.
Recruitment Process:
7.When will Shell start recruiting Graduates?
•Shell’s Graduate Recruitment will be an ongoing process. Starting fro
m May/June in 2004, Shell will start another round of graduate recruitment.
8.Will Shell come to recruit in campus in October 2004 as well?
•Yes, we will come to recruit on campus in October as well. For those w
ho miss the time to apply in June, we will still have another round of graduat
e recruitment.
9.If I apply in June 2004, may I apply in October 2004 again?
•No, you can’t.
•However, you can re-apply if you leave at least:
12 months from the date of the final outcome of your previous applica
tion, if you were successful up to an interview;
2 years from the date of the final outcome of your previous applicati
on, if you were invited to a SRD.
•We advise this to enable you to have a better chance of being successf
ul the second time round. The additional time will allow you to demonstrate th
at you have developed yourself further and have gained additional experience a
nd/or qualifications.
10.Why should I apply in May and June 2004?
•First, because Shell has limited number of positions, the earlier you
apply, the better chance you will get an offer provided that you meet our sele
ction criteria and pass our SRD process.
•Second, if you pass SRD in June, you will get the offer around the end
of July, and we will leave you enough time to make the decision. If you sign
up the offer, we may start our on-boarding program and provide you opportuniti
es to know more our business and your job, so that when you start your job off
icially, you are able to do you job more efficiently and effectively with less
anxiety as a new comer.
•Third, the whole application process will be a good learning experienc
e that prepares you for your interviews with other large MNCs in the next seme
ster.
11.If the positions have been filled by July 2004, will Shell still come to r
ecruit in October 2004?
•It’s hard to say whether we will be able to fill the original number
of positions.
•Our recruitment targets are evolving. It’s even harder to predict sud
den changes in business which may result in extra recruitment needs.
•Even if we are lucky to fill all the original number of positions, if
you demonstrate outstanding leadership potential, Shell is always trying the b
est to create a position for a top talent.
12.How many does Shell plan to recruit in our colleges / university?
•We do not have any quota based on location, university, degree of educ
ation, major, gender etc.
13.Does Shell recruit people only from this university?
•We welcome applications from all sources.
14.What majors does Shell prefer?
•We do not have any preference for a certain major since we are largely
looking for potential.
•In Shell, we have seen Finance Director studied insects, External Affa
irs Director majored in zoology.
•However, we do require you to obtain a degree in petroleum, chemicals,
geo-science etc. if you are applying for jobs in EP business.
15.Does Shell give credit to students with more extracurricular experience?
•We do not automatically give credit to such students simply because th
ey have the experience.
•They only way that such experience comes into play is when it gives ev
idence of the attributes that we are after, which are Capacity, Achievement an
d Relationships.
•For students with no experience in, i.e. Students Union, they may wish
to demonstrate those attributes through other experiences. There are many way
s to demonstrate your Capacity, Achievement and Relationships.
16.Does Shell recruit in Beijing/Shanghai/Guangzhou only?
•In terms of actual campus activities and location for Shell Recruitmen
t Day (SRD), yes. The reason is resource constraints. We simply cannot exhaust
every place in the country.
•However, we do not reject applications from other places. But we may h
ave to defer processing such applications, as we don’t have enough immediate
resources to do selection in those places.
17.How much does Shell value academic results?
•We recruit for demonstrated Capacity, Achievement and Relationships on
ly, without giving academic results a specific weight.
•Good academic results could well be an evidence of Achievement and Cap
acity, and sometimes even Relationships. But we don’t draw an equal sign betw
een mediocre academic results and low potential. Nevertheless, we usually don’
t expect a high potential person to do very bad in study.
18.Does Shell have a preference for masters (incl. MBA) to bachelors?
•No.
•Our past experience does not support a casual correlation between degr
ee of education and potential.
•Our selection process also usually does not give advantage to those wi
th more years of education or working experience. However, more general knowle
dge, including corporate governance, social structure etc., does help sometime
s. The reason is we are looking for people prepared to lead business in the fu
ture. So we expect you have some basic knowledge.
19.Does Shell prefer to recruit male students?
•Absolutely not.
•Actually in the whole Shell Group, we target to recruit 50% female stu
dents among all graduate recruits.
•In the some of the past several years, we actually recruited more fema
les than males.
•And among our most senior PRC staff, the majority are female.
20.Does Shell recruit those with work experience?
•For those who have less than 4 years work experience, yes. But as a ge
neral principle, we do not recruit those with more than 4 years experience as
Graduates.
•However, we are more than happy to recruit those with more than 4 year
s work experience through our experienced hiring process, please check our car

21.How do I apply? Can I send a hard copy of my resume directly to a HR perso
n instead of applying online?
•There are three ways you can apply for. First, go to How To Apply on o
ur Graduate Recruitment website, you can fill out Shell Application Form direc
tly online. Second, you can download Shell Application Form, fill it out and e
mail it to recruiter@shellhr.com. Third, you can download and print out Shell
Application Form, after you finish the form, you can mail to

•Except Shell Application Form, Shell does not require applicants to su
bmit any other material. However, if you don’t feel that the standard Shell A
pplication Form enough to show us your potential and capabilities, you may sub
mit your CVs, essays, or publications, references etc. with filled out Shell A
pplication Form.
22.How does Shell screen candidates through Shell Application Form?
•We put most attention to your answers to the general questions. So we
suggest you give thoughtful answers to these questions, particularly when the
application form filters out a significant number of applicants.
•What we are looking for in the application forms is your own involveme
nt in activities. So we do not suggest you simply tell us a story without elab
orating your personal experience. We look forward to seeing how you approach,
what you deliver and your CAR demonstrated in the process.
23.What is a Structured Interview?
The term Structured Interview is in contrast to Unstructured Interview. Studie
s show that Structured Interviews give higher level of accuracy.
•In Structured Interview, the timing and order of questions are all wel
l structured in advance.
•In our model, a Structured Interview is comprised of four parts: Intro
duction, Life Questions when you will be asked to describe your past experienc
e, General Topics or Case Study when you will be asked to analyze a general is
sue or business/social case and Candidate Questions. The whole interview will
take 30 to 40 minutes.
24.What is Shell Recruitment Day (SRD)?
•Shell Recruitment Day (评估中心) is a one-day assessment process when
you will go through Case Study, Proposal, Group Discussion, and Structured Int
erview by various assessors to come up with an estimation of your potential.
•If you are invited to SRD, we will give you a detailed briefing of SRD
arrangement before it actually happens.
25.Does Shell require high level English proficiency?
•We recruit for potential instead of language skills. So we do not put
English proficiency as a requirement.
•As a general principle, we are pursuing a strategy of localization and
fabricating an environment where people don’t be marginalized or disadvantag
ed because of language barrier. Though it is undeniable that for people to dev
elop into leadership positions, it is necessary to master English, we trust th
at people with good potential should be able to improve English over time.
•Nevertheless, as we still have expatriates, there is a chance that you
meet foreign interviewers and assessors. We encourage you to use English as i
t occurs. You don’t need to worry about the wording you apply. We encourage y
ou to use simple English.
•We are making efforts to eliminate language barriers in the recruitmen
t process. Compared to 2003, we have translated all SRD materials into Chinese
for easy reading and we expect to make further progress over time.
26.When can we expect a firm offer?
•Late July or Early August 2004 for May/June 2004 applicants.
•November/December 2004 for October 2004 applicants.
27.How does Shell decide who should go to which job?
•It takes into consideration organizational needs, your own preference,
location and your background.
•We will communicate with you regarding the details of the job when we
give you an offer.
Salary and Welfare:
28.Can Shell help solve the Beijing residency (户口) issue?
•We do not require you to have a Beijing residency as a necessary condi
tion of employment. We have staff working here with no Beijing residency.
•Generally speaking, as long as you have 留京指标, you should have no b
ig problem with a legitimate Beijing residency status. Shell’s willing to pro
vide support in your application process.
29.Does Shell support my further education for masters & doctors while workin
g?
•Shell support s our staff’s efforts in personal development and growt
h.
•However applications will be processed and approved by business direct
ors taking into account of company business needs, individual developmental ne
eds and competitive comparison against other staff on performance and developm
ental potential etc.
•As a condition, people are required to service the company for two yea
rs after they receive the reimbursement of education. Otherwise, they should p
ay back the company in pro-rata.
30.Does Shell provide housing?
•No, we don’t.
31.How much does Shell offer?
•We offer more than RMB6500 on a 13-month basis.
•We expect you come to Shell for more than salary.
32.Is there a package difference for bachelors and those with higher degrees
of working experience?
•There’s no guaranteed premium for those with higher degrees of educat
ion or working experience.
•We may offer higher, but do not expect a big difference, unless your e
xperience justifies a job of higher level.
33.What other benefits and welfare does Shell offer?
•Shell is a caring company. We care about our employees’ welfare.
•Except benefits obliged by China Labor Law, Shell offers generous tota
l compensation package (salary and benefits), such as Supplementary Medical In
surance and Housing Scheme, and Shell Club etc.
•Again, we expect you to come to Shell for not just the compensation pa
ckage.

•For Graduate Staff, we do have 3-year program to help them in the earl

•In addition, Graduate also receives close management attention & coach
ing and enjoys network among themselves.
36.What training does Shell offer?
•We would rather use the word ‘learning’ to ‘training’. The change
of wording reflects Shell’s philosophy in developing people, i.e. you take re
sponsibility for personal development.
•We do have resources and a variety of learning courses for our graduat
e staff. When you join Shell, you will receive 6-months on-boarding program, a
llowing you understand Shell General Business Principle, other policies, Shell
five businesses, different functions and etc. In addition, our Learning Depar
tment will provide functional courses, leadership courses and English courses
etc.
•But the general principle for attending learning courses is fit-for-pu
rpose, i.e. people receive the courses to meet their personal development need
s and Shell business needs. Under such principle, we do not offer fixed learni
ng courses to our Graduate staff except one leadership education course, since
they face different business challenges in their jobs and their background va
ries.
•In addition, Shell emphasizes on learning on the job, and delivering o
n the job. Studies have shown that learning while doing is the most effective
way.
37.Are there overseas training opportunities in Shell China?
•Yes, there are opportunities of overseas training. However, it is on a
needed basis and situation varies across businesses and departments.
38.Are there overseas working opportunities in Shell China?
•Yes.
•Shell is the single company in the world that has the largest number o
f expatriates.
•There are now around 40 China parented PRC staff who are either workin
g or have worked abroad – if you are aware that we now employ some 460 PRC, i
t is not a small percentage. And we are accelerating the pace in the coming ye
ars.
39.How about localization situation in Shell China?
•Developing PRC leaders in Shell China and accelerating localization is
an important objective of Shell China People Strategy.
•However, Shell is a global company that emphasizes diversity and equal
opportunity. Balance of expatriates and local talents will enable Shell to me
et global challenges and excel in global competition. Therefore, you will noti
ce that whilst we are sending successful PRC managers to work abroad, we also
import expatriates to work in China.
40.How about the work life balance in Shell?
