Angela Sibley
One year career path
Fixed Income Research Associate, Global Research, London, UK
Induction Programme and Wholesale Bank Academic Programme, Singapore & Malaysia
International Career Development Programme
Before Standard Chartered
I graduated with a First Class BSc in Statistics from University College London.
Why Standard Chartered?
I always wanted to join a company that was large enough to be a key player in the markets in which they operate, but also small enough so that I could really make a difference from day one. The opportunity to really travel the world at the start of the my career was also a big attraction. Now that I have been in the bank a short while, a great highlight has been the two phases of training held in Singapore and Malaysia. This training was an opportunity to build up a global network within the firm, as well as a great chance to learn about the 22 different countries and cultures represented.
Developing knowledge
Working as part of the Global Research team for 12 months has given me the opportunity to develop an in-depth knowledge of Fixed Income Research. There have been many opportunities to learn from the rest of the Global Research team and from other areas of the bank with whom we work closely like Fixed Income Origination and Trading. We also go outside the Bank for knowledge, recently I travelled to Uganda to attend the African Development Bank Conference, where I had the opportunity to meet many senior government officials and industry leaders from all over Africa. I have had real opportunities to meet central bank governors, journalists and senior management of Standard Chartered from all over the world.
Responsibility brings challenge
Being given a lot of responsibility from day one was a huge challenge. I feel I am already making a real difference in my current role. As part of the Fixed Income Research team focusing on African Fixed Income and Asset Backed Securities, the research I am producing on African Fixed Income is the first of its kind done by any bank in the world. As I am the only member of my team focussing on African Fixed Income it is down to me to make sure we continue to produce the leading research on this area.
And my future?
When I look back to how much I have learnt in the past year I feel I have achieved a lot. Not only about my area of work but about many different areas of banking. Coming away from day-to-day work to attend training provides an ideal forum to reflect on career aspirations alongside other graduates. My future career aspirations are constantly changing as I learn more about my strengths.
