Before Standard Chartered
I graduated with an MBA in International Management and a BBA in Management.
Why Standard Chartered?
The Bank’s Graduate Programme is the most highly rated graduate program in Kenya. It is known for its ability to give graduates exposure to different areas of the business and limitless opportunities to explore their potential. The aspect of international exposure coupled with continual development of the graduates was what really stood out from other competing graduate programs.
Fast-paced progress
After joining the graduate programme, I spent the whole of my first year going through corporate banking orientation and had the opportunity to participate and work with people from other parts of the business, from strategic functions to product management rolling out ‘WebBank’ – Kenya’s first web based banking product. I then took on the role of Sales Process Manager for the Wholesale Bank in Africa and this has been an excellent opportunity for me. I have had a chance to work with all the sales teams in Africa in aligning and managing our sales pipelines, in addition to building up the profile of the Africa Wholesale Banking business. My biggest achievement has been coordinating our Wholesale Banking strategy for Africa, which has now become a living document for the whole Africa team.
A common vision for Africa
Working across 13 countries, it has been challenging to drive a common understanding of the Africa business, you’d be amazed how many people still think Africa is a country whose capital city is South Africa! The Wholesale Bank business in Africa has such great potential for growth that sometimes my team is overcome by ambition to do it all at once. I enjoy being a good ambassador for Africa and continuing to foster an understanding of this great continent that is just bursting with opportunity. We operate in extremely challenging economic environments but the team I work with is superb and just recently had the Banker Magazine annual awards, where the Bank won four awards for Africa – Best Bank in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Zambia.
And my future?
In the future I am very keen to head up one of the businesses in Africa but would relish the opportunity to gain more exposure in Project Management and Strategy.
