effective interview

A common theme
There are many different types of interviews designed to serve
different purposes, but most will follow a similar "theme"
involving three stages:
Affinity -- The parties establish a relationship
Reciprocity -- Exchanging information
Completion -- Closing the interview
First impressions are very important, and establishing this
"Affinity" or rapport will set the tone of the interview. Many
Human Resources managers agree that the decision to hire is
greatly influenced by the first five minutes of the interview.
A good interviewer will introduce himself/herself, and take the
lead. Follow their lead. If they are friendly and personable, be
just as friendly and personable. If they are formal and serious,
you must behave likewise. Some employers use what seems to be
casual conversation to get to know you on a more personal level.
This may be crucial when making the decision whether or not to hire.
Tips:
Maintain eye contact and smile. This is one way of communicating
confidence. For many people this can be a problem if they are naturally
shy or come from a culture where eye contact is considered rude.
For those people, focus on the space between the interviewer''s eyebrows
or on a point just above it. This may help you feel more comfortable.
If the interviewer offers his or her hand, shake it firmly. If they
don''t, it is still appropriate to offer yours.
Wait until the interviewer sits or offers you a seat before sitting down.
Politely refuse refreshments. They can get in the way of the interview
process, and there is nothing worse than spilling something during an
interview.
If the interviewer is making small talk, participate. However, be sure
to keep your answers short and positive.
Reciprocity
This constitutes the majority of the interview. This is the mutual
exchange of information. It is your opportunity to let the interviewer
know what you have to offer, and your chance to learn more about the
company. (In addition, we recommend that you do research on the
company with which you are seeking employment before your scheduled
interview. See "Research the Company" below.)
Tips:
When you answer a question, look directly at, or into the eyes of
the interviewer.
Watch the interviewer''s body language both when they ask questions
and when you answer them. (This may be in the form of a face or a
shift in position.) If he or she looks confused, ask if you can
clarify anything.
Be aware of your body language. Sit upright, but not stiffly.
Try to find a comfortable position and hold it if you can throughout
the interview.
Try not to appear bored or anxious. Don''t look at your watch.
Participate in the interview as if you were really enjoying it.
You may jot short notes to remind you of questions if necessary
after the interview.
